30 Day Kindness Challenge: How to Strengthen your Community

Multiple reviews and studies show volunteering and kindness improve mental and physical health.1 Time Magazine also mentioned how community service is linked to lower anxiety for youth2 and community service has been an affective approach for reducing violence.3 Introducing this 30 Day Kindness Challenge can be the best first step to ensure that our communities are safe, strengthened and happier.

I was inspired to create this 30 Day Kindness Challenge after realizing how fragile and sacred life truly is. In this world too often do humans try to prove that they are right. Headlines highlight division, loss and violence. We’ve lost the meaning of community. I felt a deep desire to do something simple, yet meaningful, to help restore a sense of humanity and compassion in my own community.

For most of history, my ancestor’s world was no bigger than their village. They poured their love and effort into the people around them, and sometimes, I think, that’s the best and most powerful thing we can do and ultimately should be doing with our time.

I keep coming back to Christ’s words to “love your neighbor4 and wondered what it might look like if we each made a small, intentional effort every single day to care for the people around us.

Research also suggests that the mental and physical benefits of serving your community are strongest when people act from genuine concern rather than for recognition or social pressure. Small consistent practices produce larger benefits for both giver and receiver.5

My hope is that this challenge will multiply. That it sparks a renewed reverence for humanity and reminds us that kindness still has the power to heal hearts.
