In this comprehensive guide, I’ll take you through the step-by-step process of creating your very own faux marble epoxy countertop.

Materials Needed:

Before you embark on your faux marble epoxy countertop journey, you’ll need to gather all the necessary materials. Below are the materials I utilized in my project below:

  1. Plywood or MDO: The base for your countertop. I did two layers of 3/4th birch plywood.
  2. Epoxy Resin: I did the 3 gallon kit. The team at ZCounterform is great to work with and will help you decide how much you need for your project.
  3. Solid White Pigment: This helped create the base white coat for the project.
  4. Metallic Powders: Helps create the vein process on your second layer of Epoxy. (I used Bright White, Silver Pearl and Silver Grey.)
  5. Mixing Cups and Stir Sticks: For mixing the epoxy and paints and to apply the marble effect.
  6. Latex Gloves: To protect your hands
  7. Squeegee Trowel or High Foam Density Roller: To apply the epoxy.
  8. Spray Paint: To spray edges or any other areas
  9. Heat Gun or Kitchen Torch: To remove air bubbles from the epoxy.
  10. Plastic & Cardboard boxes: To protect your flooring and cupboards.

Step 1: Preparing Your Workspace

Before you dive into the epoxy countertop project, ensure you have a well-ventilated and dust-free workspace. This will help you achieve the best results. Remember to wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves and a mask as epoxy can emit fumes that may be harmful if inhaled. Likewise, pull back hair into a pony tail and protect beards. Protect all cabinets with plastic and cover your floors with cardboard boxes and plastic. I installed my plywood base on top of my kitchen cabinets before pouring the epoxy.

Step 2: Building the Countertop Base

  1. Measure and cut your plywood or MDF to fit your countertop area.
    • For tips on how to cut 4×8 boards, read my blog post about it here.
  2. Sand the surface to ensure it’s smooth and free from imperfections.

Step 3: Mixing the Epoxy

  1. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing your epoxy resin. Be careful to not mix too much so you don’t experience exotherm.
  2. Be precise with your measurements to ensure a proper cure.
  3. Divide the mixed epoxy into separate containers for the white, gray, and black colors for the veining process.

Step 4: Creating the Faux Marble Effect

  1. Start with the white pigment epoxy as the base layer.
  2. Pour it onto the countertop and spread it evenly with a trowel or foam roller.
  3. After about 16 hours, but before 22 hours, when the epoxy is tacky, add a thin 2nd layer of either clear epoxy or epoxy mixed with the white metallic powder.
  4. Once the 2nd layer has been added, Add veins and patterns using the gray and black metallic powders w/ epoxy.
  5. Use a paint stick to blend the colors and create a marble effect.
  6. Experiment with different patterns until you achieve the desired look.

Epoxy is VERY forgiving. So if you make mistakes, it’s okay! Embrace them.

Step 5: Removing Air Bubbles

  1. Pass a heat gun or kitchen torch over the surface to eliminate air bubbles.
  2. Be careful not to overheat the epoxy, as it can cause damage or yellow it.

Step 6: Curing and Sealing

  1. Allow the epoxy to cure for the recommended time (usually 24-48 hours).
  2. If necessary, wet sand the surface lightly to remove any imperfections.
  3. Apply a clear epoxy sealer to protect your faux marble finish.
