Progress of a DIY Hall Tree with black shiplap

Week 3 of the ORC

Week 3 of the One Room Challenge is here! The hall tree for my mudroom is coming along slowly but very well.

I was able to get all the shiplap and side trim up and painted it all black. I used Behr’s Dark Secret in a matte finish.

I did learn some things along the way.

1. When doing vertical shiplap I should try and center it and make sure that the boards are even from the middle out. Because I did not do this, on the right side of my hall tree there is a shorter board and it just makes my OCD crazy! So learn from me and make sure that the right and left sides of your vertical shiplap project is mirroring each other as perfect as possible. It will be more pleasing to the eye.

2. I also re-learned how important it is to peak your tape off when your paint is wet. Letting it dry just leads to disaster 😂

I was just super proud that so far most of this project has been completed with leftover scraps from past projects. I’ve only spent money to get 4 more boards of shiplap. The paint, the trim, the rest of the shiplap, the caulk and wood filler is all from past projects and that has made me so giddy!

For Week 4 here’s what I have planned:

  • Add base trim
  • Stain and add wood for the hooks
  • Start creating the cubbies

Cheers to week 4! 🥂
