How to Build Easy DIY Hexagon Shelves

If you’re new to DIY then these DIY Hexagon Shelves for beginners are the perfect project for your home. These shelves were SO easy to make and they are the perfect addition to any home. Read below for the details on how to create these beautiful shelves.

Once you finish this project, you’ll have to try these DIY Concrete Bowls that you could use to put succulents in for Mother’s Day, Christmas or Springtime neighbor gifts.

Now let’s get started with these beautiful DIY shelves.

Skill Level: Beginner

Supplies:

Now let’s get to building!

  1. You’ll want to start by cutting 6 equal pieces of wood at 30 degree angles on each side so that each piece looks like a trapezoid.
    • Determine how wide you want your overall hexagon shelf to be. I made big ones that were 2 feet wide, so I knew that each piece of my hexagon had to be cut at half that size = 1 foot long. (Feel free to watch my Instagram highlight bubble ‘Hex Shelves’ for more tips on how to cut the boards).
  2. Once you have all the pieces cut to size. Lay the pieces side by side with the short side face down.
  3. Tape a long strip of blue tape (and duct tape for extra hold) along all the pieces as to connect them together. Make sure you have extra tape hanging off one side.
  4. Once taped, flip the pieces over and apply wood glue to the 30 degree angles and then roll the boards up together. You should now have your hexagon shape. Use the excess tape on the one end to tape the two ends of the hexagon together.
  5. Wipe off any excess glue with a wet paper towel. And have your shelves sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours start unraveling the tape and applying wood filler to the corners to give it a finished look.
  6. Once the wood filler has set. Sand with 180 grit and then with 220 grit. This will also ensure that any unnecessary wood filler and wood glue are removed before staining.
  7. Apply your stain color of choice and once dried add some sawtooth hooks to the back and you’re ready to hang and decorate your DIY Hexagon Shelves!
Some people wanted to see how I applied the sawtooth hangers. I added one on the top and one on the bottom and hung the shelves up onto two nails in the wall.
